PORTSMOUTH

Portsmouth is a 110 MW coal-fired electric facility located in Portsmouth, VA. The plant was constructed in 1987 by Cogentrix to provide steam to Virginia Chemicals (now BASF Corp.) and electricity to Dominion Virginia Power. The plant's electricity is currently under contract to NOVEC. The site is designed to accommodate support facilities on approximately 18 acres of land. The plant has six Foster Wheeler boilers, which supply steam to two General Electric single shell, single flow condensing turbines. Coal is received by the facility via rail into two separate terminals and is transferred to the facility by Cogentrix-owned 5000-ton barge. Coal is unloaded from the barge using clamshell pedestal crane configuration located at the Cogentrix pier and is transferred via pipe tube conveyor to the plant. Cogentrix owns 100% of Portsouth and is responsible for the operations and commercial management of the project.
