Manager, Human Resources — Charlotte, North Carolina


Cogentrix is a leading independent power producer with a long track record of successfully acquiring, developing, constructing, operating, improving and divesting power generation assets. Cogentrix is owned by funds managed by The Carlyle Group, one of the world’s largest alternative asset management firms, and serves as Carlyle’s in-house power asset management platform. Cogentrix has been directly involved in the development, ownership, operations and management of coal-fired, natural gas-fired, and solar power assets delivering a combined generating capacity in excess of 10 GW. Through the ownership and operation of these plants, Cogentrix has participated in most of the major power regions in the U.S. Cogentrix currently manages plants in the Carlyle portfolio, which has a total net generation of approximately 8800 MW.



Provide expertise and support business objectives related to Human Resources, including: recruiting and staffing, employee performance management, policy interpretation and administration, and employee relations. Serve as a contact for Human Resources related matters. Manage day-to-day activities as necessary to ensure maximum effectiveness of the Human Resources function. Assist all levels of management on employee/Human Resources related matters. The person in this position will also ensure reporting and management practices are in compliance with existing Federal, State and local requirements.



Talent Management

  • Attract/Source top-talent through initiation and completion of the recruiting and selection process via job boards, referrals, and ad response. This includes: developing and revising position descriptions, identifying methods and resources to attract strong candidates, reviewing qualifications of potential internal and/or external candidates, and scheduling and conducting interviews
  • Workforce planning including collaborating with hiring managers to identify departmental recruiting needs and open positions
  • Initiate, negotiate, and maintain working relationships with external recruiting and staffing agencies, where necessary, to facilitate the generation of high-quality candidates
  • Initiate and complete the onboarding process for new hires, including employees hired as the result of company acquisitions

Performance Management

  • Manage the company-wide performance management process and related systems, including annual performance evaluations

Employee Relations

  • Provide guidance and expertise to management on HR-related matters including policies, practices, procedures, issues affecting employee relations, and effective dispute resolution
  • Partner with management to resolve complex human resource matters, questions or concerns
  • Work closely with management to help drive a positive, professional, high-performance culture
  • Ensure legal and policy compliance pertaining to all employee relations and HR matters
  • Provide HR advice and counsel in the interpretation and application of company policies, practices and procedures
  • Assist with the timely communication to management and union personnel regarding new initiatives policies, procedures or relevant regulatory updates
  • Where applicable, assist with employee-related HR due diligence as it relates to future merger and acquisition opportunities
  • Assist and support, as appropriate, investigations related to employee complaints and concerns

Policies & Procedures Administration

  • Assist in the development, implementation, communication, and interpretation of all Human Resources programs, policies, and employee guidelines to achieve work goals and fulfill legal requirements
  • Ensure consistency across the company and compliance with all existing employment and labor laws

Additional Responsibilities

  • Interact regularly with employees, all levels of management, job applicants, and vendors regarding Human Resources related matters
  • Manage the company-wide service recognition program
  • Manage the company-wide online career website
  • Handle multiple Human Resources assignments, while completing routine HR activities and consulting with or updating managers on a regular basis
  • Effectively manage deadlines and timelines associated with implementation and administration of Human Resources programs and initiatives
  • Work closely with and, where applicable, manage external third party relationships as required (vendors associated with recruiting, relocation, pre-employment, performance management, services awards, etc.)
  • Maintain knowledge of current and trending Human Resources concepts and practices
  • Additional Human Resources activities related to the acquisition and divestiture of various company assets

  • HR experience in a multi-site environment



  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources Management or related field
  • Strong computer skills and intermediate experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • Minimum of 7+ years of professional level work experience in Human Resources; with an emphasis in recruiting and employee relations
  • A PHR/SPHR or related certification preferred
  • Experience with Ceridian Dayforce and Hyperion a plus
