The Company is also focused on the continued development of natural gas-fired electric generation. The Company believes natural gas will play an increasing role in the U.S. electric generation market. Combustion of natural gas creates fewer emission issues than the combustion of other carbon-based fuel alternatives. Cogentrix has extensive experience with the development, construction and operation of gas-fired generation. The Company believes that with continued increases in the contribution of renewable generation to the U.S. electric grid there will be additional demands for base/intermediate load and grid firming resources to address the intermittency challenges inherent with certain renewables, and that efficient, dispatch flexible natural gas resources will play an important role.
